BHSF-funded cameras help in fight against epilepsy

Two cameras which monitor brain activity at the same time as checking body movements, are being used at Birmingham Children’s Hospital to determine whether children have epilepsy or not.

The cameras, funded by sponsorship cash raised by staff at BHSF, are in the neurophysiology ward and record patients’ behaviour during seizures.

Clinical physiologist Elaine Quinn said: “Video is so important, it’s the number one thing in diagnosing epilepsy. It’s part and parcel of the test which checks what the brain is doing at the same time as movements of the body”.

The £1,400 funding for the cameras was raised by the staff who took part in the Women’s Challenge Run and from contributions from the company, and a plaque on the wall of the ward identifies the part BHSF played in obtaining the new equipment.

Peter Maskell, chief executive at BHSF, said: “The hospital is one of BHSF’s corporate social responsibility partners, so it was really pleasing to be able to supply equipment which makes a great difference to how epilepsy is diagnosed”.
