BHSF Group CEO Honoured with Top Business Accolade
Peter Maskell has been presented with the IoD West Midlands Chairman’s Award at its Director of the Year Awards, and was praised for being an exemplary leader.
Group Chief Executive for more than 18 years, Mr Maskell was recognised for the role he has played in growing the historical Birmingham-based organisation into the respected nationwide health and wellbeing provider it is today.
Presenting the award to Mr Maskell at Edgbaston Stadium, Dr Jason Wouhra OBE said: “As in previous years, I have tried to choose a winner that adds incredible value to our region – someone who is not only an exemplary director and leader, but also looks beyond a balance sheet to see what impact they, as a business and an individual, are having on their immediate community.
“The person I have chosen is a well-known face within the region, yet a very humble and unassuming individual. He has enjoyed great business success, at the same time developing an outstanding management team around him to secure its continued growth after his approaching retirement in August.”
Peter Maskell joined BHSF as Chief Executive in 1999 and has overseen the growth of the business, from a provincial not-for-profit health insurer to a health and wellbeing business with national reach, turning over £43 million.
Starting with a team of 48 staff (and just three computers), BHSF now comprises more than 260 employees.
In recent years, a major development for BHSF has been the creation of its highly regarded UK and Ireland occupational health business, which now has a turnover in excess of £5m. In addition, the Company’s portfolio of HR support products and employee benefits is now provided to 3,000 client businesses throughout the country.
Mr Maskell said: “It is a huge honour to have been presented with the IoD West Midlands Chairman’s Award. When I think back to when I joined BHSF 18 years ago, it really is incredible to see how the business has grown and developed, which is in no small part to the incredible team we have in place driving its success forward.
“I have always believed that successful businesses should put something back into society, which is evident from the number of corporate social responsibility projects that are delivered by BHSF.
“We have all worked hard to develop into a nationwide health and wellbeing provider with a strong sense of corporate responsibility, and I am exceptionally proud of how far we have come. This award win really is a fantastic honour and a brilliant way to celebrate my upcoming retirement.”
Locally, BHSF has supported Town Hall and Symphony Hall, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Acorns Children's Hospice, St Basils, Ladywood Project, Alzheimers Society, The Rathbone Society, a number of schools and many more organisations.
Peter has been an engaged IoD member and a good friend to the West Midland’s office. He was the overall winner in 2012, and has encouraged a number of his Executive team to continue their professional development with the IoD and become Chartered Directors. He has also served on the councils of the Chamber of Commerce, the West Midlands CBI and the Birmingham Insurance Institute – where he was President on two occasions.
